Episode 11: Becoming Captivated by Eric Carle

A rare experience of encountering the original illustrations for "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

Eric Carle is famously known as the creator of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," a book that everyone has likely seen at least once. At the exhibition, Yugumi was able to view the beautiful original illustrations created with his signature collage technique up close. She was deeply moved by the brushwork and the subtle traces of revisions, which offer a different perspective than the printed picture books. The exhibition presented a world of rich colors that can be enjoyed by both children and adults alike.

Unexpected works filled with love for Tohoku were also on display.

The venue featured works that convey Carle's warm personality, including pieces created for the Great East Japan Earthquake charity, accompanied by messages like "Arigato" (Thank You) and "Ganbatte" (Do Your Best). The exhibition also included an extensive collection of rare documents, such as rough sketches and brainstorming materials, offering a glimpse into his creative process. Yugumi seems to have taken her time to fully immerse herself in these displays.

She is looking forward to the arrival of an item she impulsively bought.

Unable to resist the temptation of the gift shop, Yugumi ended up purchasing an exhibition catalog, pin badges, and even tableware. To top it off, she decided to buy a certain expensive item for herself as a birthday gift for the first time in her life.
